Newborn laundry detergent: our advice for deciphering labels and choosing laundry detergent suitable for baby

The skin of a newborn is up to 5 times thinner than that of an adult. It is therefore more permeable, more fragile and more reactive to chemical substances.
While we often think about choosing the right diapers or cleansing products, an essential element is sometimes underestimated: baby laundry.

Why use a specific detergent for baby clothes?

Conventional detergents are designed to remove stubborn stains, but not necessarily to respect delicate and fragile skin.

To watch out for on the labels:

  • Of synthetic fragrances and allergens

Perfumes added to conventional detergents only serve to give a pleasant smell to the laundry. These perfumes are often composed of chemical substances that can be allergenic. In babies, they may cause itching, redness or skin reactions, even after several washes. (LimoneneLinaloolCitronellolGeraniolHexyl Cinnamal)

  • Of controversial conservatives (MIT, CMIT)

MIT and CMIT are preservatives used to prevent laundry detergent from going bad over time. They are known to be irritating and can trigger allergic reactions, especially on sensitive skin. This is why they are increasingly avoided in products intended for babies. (Methylisothiazolinone (MIT), Methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT)Benzisothiazolinone)

  • Of optical dyes and brighteners

Dyes give a nice color to laundry, but have no role in cleaning.
Optical brighteners give the illusion of whiter laundry by depositing on the fibers of the fabric. These substances can remain on clothing and come into direct contact with the baby's skin, which can cause irritation. (Optical BrightenersFluorescent BrightenerDisodium Distyrylbiphenyl Disulfonate)

  • Of surfactants

Surfactants are the ingredients that help remove stains and dirt. Some, too powerful, can be aggressive for babies' fragile skin. Residue may remain on laundry after washing and cause dryness or skin discomfort. (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate)

  • Of chlorinated bleaches or phosphates

Chlorinated bleaches are used to disinfect and whiten laundry, but they are very harsh on babies' sensitive skin.
Phosphates improve washing efficiency, but can irritate the skin and are also harmful to the environment. Phosphates(Sodium TripolyphosphateTrisodium PhosphatePhosphoric AcidPhosphate), Chlorinated bleaches (Sodium Hypochlorite, ChlorineChlorinated Compounds)

Recognized as highly sensitizing, they should absolutely be avoided for toddlers' laundry. Even in small quantities, these ingredients can weaken babies' sensitive skin. For a newborn, it is therefore better to choose hypoallergenic detergent, designed for sensitive skin.

Baby laundry detergent: the ingredients to choose

Good baby laundry detergent isn’t just about pretty packaging. Here are the really important criteria.

Ingredients of natural origin :

Love & Green laundry detergent

  • Surfactants of plant origin (Examples: Sodium Coco-Sulfate (gentle and controlled version), Sodium Coco Glucoside Tartrate, Decyl Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate)

  • Biodegradable formula
  • Simple and transparent composition
  • Reliable tests and certifications by independent organizations such as: Ecocert. A recognized label is always better than a vague promise.
  • Tested dermatologically

Which Love & Green detergent to choose for baby’s laundry?

At Love & Green, all our detergents are designed with the same requirements:

  • Effectiveness

  • Security for sensitive skin

  • Ingredients of natural origin

  • Transparency total

But for baby laundry, and especially newborn laundry, certain options are preferable.

Most suitable for newborns: certified laundry detergent Ecodetergent fragrance free

When the skin is still immature, the rule is simple: the fewer ingredients, the better.

It does not contain any allergy-causing substances, which makes it the safest choice for limiting baby skin irritation.

Also think about the recharge !

Laundry refill

The Love & Green refill contains exactly the same formula as ready-to-use laundry detergent. Only the format changes.

The refill is a concentrated detergent to be diluted, designed to reduce environmental impact without compromising on efficiency or safety.

How does it work?

  1. Clean your 1.5 L bottle

  1. Add 1 L of tap water

  1. Pour the recharge of 500 mL

  1. Close and shake: your detergent is ready to use!

Our advice for the first wash of baby laundry

Even before birth:

  • Wash all new clothes,

  • Use fragrance-free laundry detergent,

  • Avoid softener,

  • Favor a cycle with good rinsing.

A simple reflex to reduce the risk of irritation from the first days!

In summary

  • Baby laundry deserves hypoallergenic laundry detergent

  • For a newborn, fragrance-free laundry detergent remains the safest choice

💚 Because taking care of baby’s fragile skin also starts… with laundry.
