Le papier toilette : un geste quotidien à l’impact environnemental insoupçonné

Toilet paper: a daily gesture with an unsuspected environmental impact

Every day we use toilet paper without really thinking about it. However, this everyday product has a real impact on the environment, from the use of natural resources for its manufacture to its possible effects on health. With growing ecological awareness, many households, especially parents, are turning to ecological toilet paper.

The environmental impact of toilet paper

In Europe, toilet paper is one of the most used hygiene products on a daily basis. However, the majority of toilet paper available on the market is still made from virgin fibers*, from trees cut specifically for this use. This practice directly contributes to the deforestation linked to toilet paper, with significant consequences on biodiversity and ecosystems.

The manufacture of toilet paper is also very water and energy intensive. Added to this is the use of chemical substances (whitening agents, perfumes, dyes) intended to improve the appearance or smell of the product. These chemicals, used to bleach or perfume paper, can end up in water and soil, and require more energy to produce and process, increasing the product's carbon footprint.

Finally, the plastic packaging and the transport of bulky products further accentuate the carbon footprint of traditional toilet paper.

*We speak of “virgin” fibers because they do not have not yet served and do not have not been recycled

More responsible alternatives

Fortunately, more environmentally friendly solutions exist. The ecological toilet paper, whether it is recycled, unbleached or without plastic packaging, makes it possible to significantly reduce the ecological footprint linked to this everyday product.

Recycled toilet paper limits the exploitation of natural resources by giving a second life to paper already used. Formulas that are not bleached or contain controversial substances reduce chemical pollution and preserve aquatic ecosystems.

How to choose ecological toilet paper?

To make an informed choice, several criteria must be taken into account:

  • The composition : choose 100% recycled toilet paper, fragrance-free, lotion-free and dye-free.
  • Environmental labels : the European Ecolabel is a key reference, because it guarantees a reduced environmental impact over the entire life cycle of the product. Certifications like FSC® also ensure responsible management of resources.
  • The impact on health : toilet paper dermatologically tested (Dermatest), hypoallergenic and free of controversial substances is particularly recommended for families.
  • Packaging and format : plastic-free packaging and a compressed format help reduce waste and the impact of transport.
